The Question Every Professional Is Asking Right Now

AI is reshaping entire industries in real time. Whether it's layoffs at tech giants, automation replacing mid-level roles, or entire departments being restructured — millions of skilled professionals are facing the same question: “How long can I last?”

The problem is, existing tools give you the wrong answer. Retirement calculators ask “Can you never work again?” when what you actually need to know is “How long do I have to find my next thing, and what can I do to extend that runway?”

That's a fundamentally different question — and it requires a fundamentally different tool. One that models severance timelines, unemployment benefits, spending cuts, freelance income, and the real cost of healthcare between jobs. One that gives you action triggers, not failure dates.

Not Another Retirement Calculator

Built specifically for career transitions — not 30-year retirement horizons.

Phased Income Modeling

Your income doesn't disappear all at once. This calculator models the real sequence — salary ends, severance kicks in, unemployment benefits start, then your job search timeline — so you see what actually happens month by month.

Action Timeline, Not a Countdown

Instead of showing you a scary “days until broke” number, you get specific decision points: when to file for unemployment, when to activate spending cuts, when to expand your job search. Action triggers, not failure dates.

What-If Levers

See exactly how much runway you gain by reducing spending, adding freelance income, or adjusting your job search timeline. Every lever shows its impact in months — so you know which moves matter most.

Your Runway in 3 Steps

From uncertainty to a concrete plan in under 3 minutes.

1

Enter Your Numbers

Start with just 3 inputs: your savings, monthly expenses, and salary. Smart defaults fill in the rest — unemployment benefits, job search timeline, healthcare costs — so you get a meaningful result immediately.

2

See Your Full Picture

Get your runway in months across three scenarios (conservative, moderate, optimistic), a visual projection chart, and the gross burn floor that shows your absolute minimum. Every assumption is visible and adjustable.

3

Build Your Action Plan

Your personalized action timeline shows exactly what to do at each milestone. Plus the What-If panel lets you test different strategies — spending cuts, freelance income, faster job search — and see the runway impact instantly.

How We Calculate Your Runway

This isn't simple division. The calculator runs a monthly time-step simulation that tracks your savings balance as income sources phase in and out, expenses change, and investments earn (or lose) value — month by month, for up to 36 months.

The three-scenario engine uses differentiated assumptions: the conservative scenario assumes higher expenses (+15%), negative investment returns, longer job search timelines, and lower income expectations. The optimistic scenario models the reverse. This gives you a realistic range, not a false-precision single number.

Spending reduction estimates are grounded in BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey data and Ganong & Noel (2019) research on how spending actually changes during unemployment. Healthcare cost modeling uses KFF Employer Health Benefits Survey data for COBRA and ACA marketplace premiums. Job search duration defaults come from BLS unemployment duration data by salary band.

Freelance income gets a 20% reliability haircut to counteract optimism bias — because projecting income you haven't earned yet is the fastest way to overestimate your runway. And your “action threshold” reserve floor means the calculator doesn't model you down to zero — it triggers action before you hit crisis mode.

All assumptions are visible and adjustable. We show you the math, not just the answer.
